Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is recognized each April and is dedicated to raising public awareness about sexual violence, along with educating communities on prevention, as well as empowering survivors. It was established/founded in 2001 by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC). SAAM provides an opportunity for groups, organizations and communities to discuss rape and sexual violence in an open and frank manner. Throughout the month, individuals and organizations, including ours, host events, workshops, and campaigns that are focused on fostering an understanding around sexual violence, advocating justice for those who have been victimized, and promoting safety for those who may be at risk etc.
Sexual violence affects millions globally, with impacts that resonate well beyond those individuals who are directly involved e.g., it may affect family units and children of those who have been sexually assaulted. In the United States - according to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) - nearly one woman in five and one man in thirty-eight have experienced an attempted or completed rape at some point in their life. Beyond these statistics, countless other individuals have had to deal with sexual harassment and sexual bullying which has led to lasting emotional and psychological trauma.
SAAM is instrumental in helping educate the public on the invasive and pervasive nature of sexual violence, highlighting the stigma and trauma that often isolates survivors. Through openness and an education into sexual violence comes a clearer understanding that sexual assault is not only an individual issue but also a systemic and cultural one that involves misconceptions, around issues involving respect and consent.
Prevention is central to the mission of SAAM. This can involve educating both mean and women around issues of consent and the importance of respecting boundaries. It can also involve training in self-protection and personal safety that allows those who have been targeted to recognize the signs and enact non-physical and physical solutions to avoid being victimized.
For many survivors, Sexual Assault Awareness Month provides a platform for healing, validation, and empowerment, allowing for their voices to be heard, and listened to. SAAM also promotes events such as survivor speak-outs, workshops, and storytelling sessions which offer spaces where survivors of rape and sexual assaults can share their experiences; in many cases for the first time. By spotlighting survivor stories, SAAM reinforces that survivors deserve respect, resources, and justice, and that the “blame” for their assaults, rests not with them but those who targeted and victimized them. Empowering survivors to share their stories not only fosters healing but also raises awareness and strengthens community resolve to address and prevent sexual violence.
One of the goals of SAAM is to emphasize the accountability and the role that institutions, communities, and individuals play in addressing sexual violence. If you would like to look at ways that your organization can help do this, please contact us by clicking here.
